Keeping Your Home Safe

Keeping Your Home Safe

With the end of summer and the upcoming Labor Day weekend, many people will pack their bags for vacation. We want to help ensure your home stays safe while you are out of town with the following tips.

It’s better to be safe than sorry, so planning ahead for a little extra caution before your trip will help ensure your house and belongings are safe while you’re out of town and will help keep anxiety at bay while on vacation.

One of the best ways to keep your home safe while you’re out of town is to have someone you trust staying at your home or checking in while you’re away.  Maybe you have a friend or family member who would be willing to stay at your house or stop by at least once a day to feed the pets, bring in the mail, water the plants, and turn on and off the lights. If not, there are services you can use for house-sitting and pet-sitting while you're away.

At the very least, if you can’t have someone stay at your house, and you’ll be away for more than a couple of days, contact the post office and newspaper to stop delivery while you are out of town. The post office will hold mail for three to 30 days. You can submit a US post office hold here. Keeping a pile of newspapers from piling up on your driveway will be a deterrent for potential home thieves. You can put your News and Observer delivery on hold here.

If you can’t employ a house sitter, investing in light timers creates the impression that your home is occupied.  Also, ask a neighbor to take out the garbage cans and bring them back down the driveway to make it appear someone is home.

As simple as it sounds, make sure your home is securely locked prior to leaving. Lock all the deadbolts and check window locks.

Remember to turn off your garage door to prevent thieves from opening it with a universal remote. Also, be sure to remove portable GPS systems in your car when you use long-term parking at the airport. It'll alert thieves that you're not home and give them a convenient map to your house.

Finally, installing a home security system or simply installing exterior lights and motion lights that run on timers is a good way to improve security around your house even when you are home.

These tips should help increase your home security and help you be at ease while out of town.
